I cant help jumping in.

BBS messaging doesnt necessarily have to have all the telnet bells and
whistles, especially the PTY stuff.  Getting other stuff to work from NT to a
pty server is very difficult.

Jabber solves the problem by converting all the message phrasing into XML,
probably the best use for that I have seen yet.

But I perfer communicating in datasturctures... create an object which has all
that is needs in it, serialize it, send it over the net to your server which
then evaluates it and displays it and/or forwards it.  If you create your own
data stucture template, chances are that it will be pretty easy to use rather
than some do-everything product.

I have been building these tools for metrical and operational communication for
years.  I designed my tools for regular personal communication but jabber seems
to have this sewn up.  XML lends naturally lends it self to formated printing,
but probably kills databases and performance must be mud.
