I am not so sure it's ruby's fault.

'dnsquery -s' works fine, also on my L-box! As ruby does not seem to be
using dnsquery explicitly, it must be something (the libsocket.so?)
dnsquery and ruby share in common. Hopefully this note gives yet another
hint to Matz.
