You might want to take a look at:

I'd be surprised if there weren't some working grid examples in the
Ruby/Tk widget demos. And specRuby uses a (Tcl/Tk) grid-based layout
system to generate a (Ruby/Tk) grid-based layout. 

(Jeremy, do you have any interest in taking over these items? You could 
add a "contributed widget how-to" section to the widget demos that 
contained and demonstrated your additions.)
