It is, this is how I do perl.  If you do gnuplot, it is absolutely
necessary,
all the best features have been deprecated for years.

However I oppose a /usr/bin/ruby for standards, it is better to put in a
perl
alias in the startup scripts or specify it in the she-bang (#!/opt/perlNNN)

... why ?? The above mentioned gnuplot problem as well as a much more
serious
problem w/ perl.  Perl 5.5.3 is the only industry accepted stable version.
Perl.com thru oreilly and active state have been pushing bad versions, they
are
infact resorting to a nerumerology formula to predice the next stable
release.
Perl6 stability will become an advocacy issue, with democracy at the middle
of
it.
