How about something like

module Storage
   def new(f)
	if File.exists?(f)
		File.open(f) {|f| return Marshal.load(f) }
	else
		super
	end
   end
end

class Obj
   extend Storage
   ...
end

(me, I miss the semantics of [[Cls alloc] init] in Obj-C...)
