In the source

  foo = 'e'
  bar = '$'
  baz = bar
  print baz

Everything starting from '$' is colored as a string.  Backwhacking the
$ does not help.  If I add a comment 

  bar = '$'  # '

Then everything is fine after that line.

By the way, if this list is the wrong place to address issues with
ruby-mode.el, then you have my sincere apology and my eagerness to
talk to the right party.  Thank you.
