What is Jarkata? Does this include the Sun HotSpot JIT? What does your
modified benchmark (without startup penalties) say?

Yeah, I agree. Ruby "comes with" Tk, like Java "comes with" Swing. The only
real difference is that there aren't many alternative GUIs for Java, and none
with any market leverage. In any case, because of this I think that, as an
end-user application platform, Ruby is in an even worse position than Java.

Hmmm. I've never seen the GTK bindings for Java. Binding Java to any JNI
immediately knocks off half the reason why I use Java in the first place.
Still, this is nice to know.

If I ever saw a wxWindows binding for Java, I'd seriously consider using it,
since I *believe* that, of all of the cross-platform toolkits, it is the most
ubiquitous, and is a decent blend of open, small, easy, and pretty (while not
being the best in any category).

Really? The primary speed (or lack thereof) culprit is the event queue?

> Well, all major Java implementations nowaday feature a JIT.

Yeah, granted. JIT takes time, and doesn't act on *all* of the code
executed. Although I agree that the following is debatable, I'd still say
that Java is more interpreted than native. Unless it is running on one of
the phantom pico-chips :-)
