Alternatives are good.  Be wary of reducing Ruby to Smalltalk-ness.  One of 
the things I like about Ruby is that the syntax is familiar.  The things that 
are being suggested in this thread seem a little obtuse to me -- not very 
obtuse, but you add up a bunch of little obtusities, and you get one ugly 
language.

It occurs to me, however, that there is one fundamental difference between
