Subject: [ruby-talk:15324] Q: Compiling Ruby 1.6.3 in Win32 (VC++)

Hello,

I am unable to compile Ruby 1.6.3 successfully with VC++.
My configuration:
-W2k, SP1
-VC++ 6, SP3
-MS Platform SDK Nov/2000 edition

When compiling the sources as described in win32/README.win32, everything
works fine until extension compilation is reached. I tracked the problem
down to the following line in "ext/configsub.rb" [14]:

    next if /^#/

The problem is that the "if" clause is always true. Therefore parsing of
uncommented config file lines is skipped. This results in the fact that hash
"CONFIG" contains only some basic entries (set explicitly in the script) and
this causes the "ext/extmk.rb" to contain many unsubstituted entries like
"@includes@"... (therefore I was not able to compile extensions).

When I replace the line with the following (added escape backslash):

    next if /^\#/

the "ext/configsub.rb" runs correctly (fills "CONFIG" hash with many more
entries than before :) ), therefore "ext/extmk.rb" is generated correctly (?
hopefully :) ) and ext projects start to compile as expected.

Unfortunately, the first ext project that is really compiled ("ext/fcntl")
produces a linker error:

    Creating library fcntl.lib and object fcntl.exp
    mswin32-ruby16.lib(mswin32-ruby16.dll) : error LNK2001:
    unresolved external symbol ?mswin32-ruby16_NULL_THUNK_DATA"

Can anybody please help me? Has anybody been able to successfully compile
Win32 version of Ruby without Cygwin (i.e. with VisualC++)? Is this Ruby
target still supported or should I install Cygwin?
