Just a thought on getting that package to compile.

There's a little used program called xmkmf which should be a part of 
any X Windows distribution. It does generate Makefiles. It's part of 
the, virtually never used outside of X builds, imake system. Never 
played with it much, but it seems to be a program that basically runs 
"make Makefiles" for IMakefile files. Similar to GNU Autoconf/make.
