By the way, for people complaining about the speed of Ruby, I'd like to point 
out that "fast" is relative.  The original shell script ran in 3.8 minutes on 
my Linux box.  After a bit of optimizing, the Ruby version ran in 9 seconds.  
After refactoring a critical algorithm, the Ruby version ran in 0.7 seconds.

This was with test data.  The typical data set took about an hour to run in 
the shell script on AIX (my Linux box ran it in a little under a half hour), 
so the unrefactored Ruby version on AIX would reduce the run time down from 1 
hour to 2.4 minutes.  The refactored Ruby version in production would reduce 
the run time down to 11 seconds.

I don't consider Ruby slow.
