I bought the pickaxe book a few weeks ago on no recommendation, just saw it
on the shelf. I've also been seeing it stocked in a lot of bookstores where
I didn't see it before. Seeing on the shelf a well written book on the
language made me feel comfortable that ruby had enough critical mass to
succeed.

Seeing that it has a fine community of active developers has drawn me into
participating myself.

I think matz and dave actively taking part helps.

Come to think of it, the absence of flaming on the group is a good thing
too.
