I'm currently in the middle of writing a shareware product ( IDE ) that provides ruby support (to be precise the language order is 1) Eiffel (because it is written in Eiffel) 2) python (to make some money with a popular language) 3) ruby (because i'm currently evaluating if it is a possible extension language for the IDE) 4) java (to make much more money :-) I think the currently nobody should think about starting an open souce company, because nearly all attempts to do so failed. Only some big companies are still alive but only because they have some very big customers which you can't reach with a) ruby b) a small startup c) without reputation.
