I can see how this would violate the spirit of ruby." One of the things I find most intriguing about ruby, however, is it's flexibility to be expressed in many different styles. Somehow the language and community have attracted perl, java, lisp and smalltalk adepts (among others) and I think ruby accomplishes this by "inviting" them to express their thoughts in their own styles, but at the same time encouraging them to experiment with others. Maybe I am just speaking for myself, but I have found few constructs in the ruby language that are unique to ruby, instead finding unique to ruby the simplicity with which one can utilize its many constructs. Perhaps the ruby way is its lack of a solitary way, and the ruby spirit lies in the zeal of its users to wander. Wayne
