This regex package (from the Apache subproject Jakarta) is (now) known as
"regexp"; it is available from http://jakarta.apache.org/regexp. The package
structure is now org.apache.regexp.*. This code is derived from the OROInc
regexp distribution by Jonathan Locke.

There's also another one from gnu, that is packaged under gnu.regexp.*

I wrote a little benchmark to test Ruby vs. org.apache.regexp. The sources
are attached (sorry). I ran each three times in a row, with no other (user
induced) computer activity, and took the last result. The results are:

Java: 26.07s user 0.48s system 97% cpu 27.175 total
Ruby: 9.74s user 0.05s system 97% cpu 10.084 total

So Ruby is about 2.5 times faster. Not suprising, considering that regular
expressions in Ruby are handled by native code. I don't think the Java lib
is too slow.

Yes.

You'd better spend your time providing performance enhancements to some
existing regex implementation.

Ditto.
