I was going to suggest taking a look at SDL, a Direct-X-like cross-platform open source 2D graphics library. Then I realized that there is not yet a Ruby binding for it on the RAA. (I have not used SDL, but there is a chapter or two on its use in "Linux Game Programming" by Mark "Nurgle" Collins, et al.)
