[ruby-talk:8194] Re: Ruby User Servey

From: "Franz GEIGER" <fgeiger@...>
Date: 2000-12-28 20:10:02 UTC
List: ruby-talk #8194
The server seems to be down rite now. Therefore:

1. How long have you been using Ruby?
  Never used it!
 --> Less than a month
 One to three months
 Three to six months
 Six months to a year
 Over a year

2. How did you hear about Ruby?
    From a friend/colleague
  Article on the Web
  Extreme Programming mailing list
  Ruby newsgroup/mailing list
  Dr. Dobbs Article
-->  Other: comp.lng.perl

3. If you're using Ruby, what are you using it for? Check as many as apply
-->    Just experimenting
  General scripting
  Web development
  Application prototyping
  Application development
  Other:

4. What operating systems do you use with Ruby? Check as many as apply
   Windows 95
-->  Windows 98
  Windows ME
-->  Windows NT
  Windows 2000
   Linux
  Solaris
  AIX
  HP-UX
  Other Unix
   Mac (System 7)
  Mac (OS/X)

  Other:

5. What other languages do you use frequently? Check as many as apply
    C
 -->  C++
  Java
-->  Visual Basic
  Delphi
   Perl
-->  Python
  PHP
  tcl
   Eiffel
  Javascript
  Powerbuilder
  Smalltalk

  Other:

6. What do you like about Ruby?
 Seems to be more OOP than Python, but more complex too.

Seems to be more dynamic than Python.

7. What things would make Ruby more useful for you?
 An IDE with a visual debugger like the Perl Debugger, PythonWin, or
ActiveKomodo!

In fact for now this is the threshold for doing more scripting with Ruby. As
a Python scripter I do not know exactly what I could win by using Ruby, but
I know that I would lose an IDE which I consider absolutely neccessary for
being productive in any language.

8. Any other comments?
Nope.

Best regards
Franz GEIGER
