also for the benefit of windows users who DON'T use vc++, making
appropriate binaries available would be nice.

under linux source isn't a problem, under windows ruby users would need
buy/install vc++

vc++ is one of the reasons i do windows programming in tcl/tk (or perl,
python, and now ruby).
