Subject: [ruby-talk:6945] configure error - ruby 1.6.1

I get an error running configure when building ruby 1.6.1. I know it's 
around line 5170 in the configure script, but I can't seem to fix it 
without hard-coding. Please help! I'm sure it has to do with the fact that 
I'm specifying --prefix=.

% make distclean
% configure --prefix=~/tools
<snip>
checking whether OS depend dynameic link works... yes
configure: : cannot execute
configure: ${prefix}/lib/ruby/site_ruby: not found
creating config.h
<snip>
