[ruby-talk:8116] Some Problems with the Ruby 161 Windows distribution

From: "Philippe Lucas" <philippe.lucas@...>
Date: 2000-12-27 15:16:36 UTC
List: ruby-talk #8116
Hi all,

I want to use Ruby on my PC Win98 for working around XML, DB BerKeley and
GUI like TCL/TK.

I have many problems whith the samples of the distribution.
I use the version Ruby 1.6.1 (2000-10-05) [i386-cygwin] that I downloaded
from RAA (ruby161-0.exe).

I can run the TCL/TK samples. Because the English Ruby TK documentation
doesn't exist, I try the Ruby-Tk81-Demos-English.
But all those samples fails, for example, with the message :
tk.rb:810:in _invoke: stack Level too deep (SystemStackLevelError) from
    tk.rb:810:in collect
    ...
    ... 736 Levels ...
    from tkencoding.rb:25:in ...
    from tkafter.rb:14
    from widget:14 in require
    from widget:14
when I run ruby widget.

So, I try the GTK samples and I have the message:
   ruby testgtk.rb

   testgtk.rb:31:in require dlopen Win32 Error 1157
A-CORRECT-PATH-BUT-WITH-UNIX-SEPARATOR-SLASH/gtk.so (LoadError)
   from testgtk.rb:31.
At this point, by seeing the gtk.so file in the site_ruby directory, i find
the names of the gtk dll which are necessary. So i put those files
(gtk-1.3.dll,gdk-1.3.dll,...) in the bin directory of Ruby. Why it doesn't
work when i put them in the gtk.so directory ?.
Well, after that, I try the standard testgtk sample and i have a lot of bug:

1) With the dialog Item:
When i press the toggle button, Ruby fails with a Segmentation Fault in
dialog.rb:34
2) With the entry item:
    I receive those messages:
        Gtk-CRITICAL gtkobject.c line 1132 assertion object != null failed
        .... entry.rb:44:in set_text destroyed GtkObject (ArgumentError)
        .... from testgtk.rb:255.
3) With gamma curve item:
    I receive those messages:
Runtime error in Ruby.exe abnormal program termination (in a dialog
box).
Gtk-WARNING invalid cast from GtkTable in GtkCarre
        .... -CRITICAL file gtkdrawing.c line 93 gtk_drawing_array_size
assertion GTK_IS_DRAWING_AREA(darea) failed.
GLib-Error could not allocate -20 bytes.
        aborting ...
4) With the color selection item:
colorset.rb:17 [BUG] Segmentation Fault stack dump.

After that, i try the Ruby Berkeley DB Interface and i have those message:
   ruby basic.rb

   basic.rb:3:in initialize wrong # of arguments(5 for 0) (ArgumentError)
   from basic.rb:3:in open
   from basic.rb:3

Finaly, i see another bug in the file irb.bat. I have installed Ruby in a
WinXX Path (C:\XXXX\Program File\Ruby-161. In this case,
with a blank char, the path is not correctly written in the file irb.bat.

I want to say that the standard samples works fine.

I wish that the standard Windows distribution comes with all the library it
wants.
I am not agree with the structure of the directory of the distribution. It
seems very ugly to find the gtk samples in the doc directory.

Happy new year.
Regards.
