Personally, I think the fact that the examples aren't self contained is a good thing. It helps me resist the tempation to sit and blindly type example code and then wonder why it doesn't work after I'm done (probably due to some typo I've made). Only including the fragments encourages development of actual understanding. I think you should leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out how to piece them together. By the end of the book, you've given them everything they need to know in order to do it.
