That was my original understanding, but the description in the next
page changed my mind.
      list.deleteFirst.to_s  -> "Song:title1_artist1 (1)"
etc are consistent with
      aSong.to_s -> "song: Bicyclelops-Fleck (260)"
in page 21 and others. (I think they all are better without ".)

That is a new thing I learned from you now.

Now I am at page 51. I tried the code at the bottom of this page, and
got an error message,
    undefined method `squeeze!' for nil (Name Error).
Is this a bug in ruby 1.6.1?  Without this one line it produced the
expected output. In my trial, songFile was changed to DATA, and the
contents of the file on top of page 53 were written after the source
code with the heading line __END__.
