I have just about no knowledge of Unicode and Asian languages, but I
seem to remember that there are problems using Unicode and the various 
Japanese encodings. If that wasn't the case, and as long as the
C-language API for extensions could be kept simple, then I think this
would be great.

This is clearly a big issue right now. There's much discussion going
one about the underlying toolkit. I've been wondering is all this talk 
about GTK vs. Tk vs. ... may be off base. Rather than use a toolkit,
could we use the Mozilla model and simply have platform-specific code?
Could we use the Mozilla code itself?

It would be good to get some closure on these discussions and get a
team started (if necessary).
