Since this thread touches on bindings for Ruby.  I just wanted
to point to a discussion of C++ bindings for Python here:

I agree with that author that the impositions of SWIG - giving
up templates and overloading, are too severe.
Therefore, I am interested in porting C++Boost, with
perhaps some synthesis of ideas from CXX/SIP if desirable, to
Ruby.  If anyone else if of like mind, perhaps we could 
collaborate.
