Subject: [ruby-talk:7404] Off topic: numbered Subject headers on this list

Are the numbered "Suject:" headers on this list absolutely necessary?
E.g.

[ruby-talk:7356] RE:  Ruby performance question
           ^^^^

It breaks Outlook's (arguably poor) "sort by thread" algorithm. Could this
automatic numbering feature be considered for removal?
