[ruby-talk:7799] Can't build Ruby 1.6.1 on Sparc Solaris 2.6

Configuring Ruby seems to go smoothly with the patch for 1.6.1 for
Solaris applied (discussed in threads I read in the list archive). Make
runs smoothly for quite a while, and then chokes at the following point:

I'm using gcc 2.8.1, and it doesn't matter whether or not the patch is
applied to 'configure.in' or whether static or dynamic builds are
specified, the error remains the same...

I've reported this to the bug-list, but I'm hoping for a quicker answer
here (for a possible solution).
