Thanks for the help, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I've incorporated
your suggestion to create both styles up front, but that didn't seem to make
much difference. I also tried setting the style on the window instead of the
individual widget, as your code seemed to suggest, but that only resulted in
no color change at all, including the initial change, which was working
before.

So, I guess I'm back to square one. Any more ideas? I posted some of my code
in [ruby-talk:7122], which might provide a little context.

Also, beyond fixing this problem, can someone explain to me conceptually why
it is so hard to change the color of a widget in Gtk? In Swing (I don't know
about other UI toolkits) changing widget color is one method call, and maybe
a refresh. Is the difficulty just a result of poor design in Gtk, or is
there an underlying reason for it? Sorry if this is slightly OT (maybe it
should be asked on a Gtk list), but I'm trying to evaluate Gtk for Ruby UI
development, and this seems like a major issue that needs to be addressed.
