Thanks, Richard... I've been thinking the same thing.
I've nothing against GTK+ (I don't actually know *any* GUI
well enough to have a preference)... but I like Swing from
what I've seen of it.

What's more, learning Swing allows you to improve your
marketability in the Java world (I know Java, but not Swing)...

Can I be the first to say it? "Java is hot, but Ruby is cool."

OTOH, Java is sometimes referred to as the "write once,
debug everywhere" language... i.e., not all JVMs are created
equal...
