[ruby-talk:20970] Sockets on OpenBSD

From: Jason DiCioccio <geniusj@...>
Date: 2001-09-07 02:54:46 UTC
List: ruby-talk #20970
Please refer to thread starting at: [ruby-talk:5715]

I am having an issue (as reported in ruby 1.6.1 with ruby 1.6.4.. The issue
is the following error (and traceback)

/usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:507:in `new': getaddrinfo: name or =
service is not known (SocketError)
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:507:in `connect'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:506:in `timeout'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:506:in `connect'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:500:in `initialize'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:198:in `new'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:198:in `conn_socket'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:187:in `connect'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:181:in `_start'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/protocol.rb:168:in `start'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.6/net/http.rb:331:in `start'
        from epymonitor.rb:23

I get that from this block of code:

Net::HTTP.start("www.epylon.com", 80) do |hconn| # This is where error is
    response , =3D hconn.get('/login.jhtml')
    puts response.body
  end

which works on pretty much any other platform. I realize that this has been
brought up before, however it's been a while and I felt it would be appropr=
iate
to resurface it to see if anyone had any additional ideas on why this doesn=
't
work. I'm not sure if it's actually failing on getaddrinfo(3) however ther=
e is
a manpage for it on openbsd at least ;).. I am running OpenBSD/i386 2.6.

If anyone has any ideas I (and i'm sure others) would love to hear them :).=
. I'm
guessing there's some difference between getaddrinfo or some other call in
openbsd that ruby doesn't like. However I would imagine this would break m=
any
more binaries that use socket code.

Thanks in advance,
-JD-
