I threw your/my eample into irb, which works like it should.
Then I put it in a script and ran it with ruby; no problem either.

$ ruby -v 
ruby 1.7.1 (2001-09-20) [i686-linux]

Tk 8.3.1

So I'l need more information to be able to help you.
