I've always thought that RealTimeBattle (see
http://realtimebattle.sourceforge.net/) would be a good way to introduce
students to programming.  It has the GUI you are looking for, and what's
more, it has the ability to allow students to write robots in any language
they choose, since all messages are passed using stdin/stdout.  I think it
would be fairly easy to write an OO wrapper for this messaging language;
design of such a wrapper could even be part of the class, if time permits.
