There is no portable way to do this in C++. The only legal data pointers in 
Standard C++ are either =0 or point to a real object.

Some vendors (Microsoft comes to mind) have provided handling of pointer 
faults allowing conversion into C++ exceptions but it is by no means possible 
to do this in all C++ implementations.
