this do convert utf-8 string to Unicod number array

def conv(s)
  n=s.split(//u).size; s.unpack("U#{n}")
end


seems very inefficient to do the utf-thing twice!
what is the proper way to do it?

problem with unpack is that it needs to know how long the string is. (thats
why the trick above)

this and related issues seems underdocumented.
