I just wanted to say, someone proposed the Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, and that really struck a chord with me. I'll never forget the enchanted day I once spent as a young child on the slopes of Mt. Dolly Sods, assisting bird watchers in catching and banding kinglets for migration counts. The kinglet is a remarkable bird. At first sight, a male Ruby-Crowned Kinglet is a drab, unexciting little thing with a dull, rusty stripe of color on it's head. But the slightest breath on his head causes the feathers to ruffle up, and the under-feathers to show through. Suddenly, this formerly dull bird has a brilliant, flourescent-red blaze crowning his little head. So to me the Kinglet has always been a symbol of hidden beauty lying just below the surface; and also a rememinder of a wonderful weekend spent in the mountains of West Virginia. Aslo, FWIW, I think the only impression many of the people I know would get from an Anime babe as as a mascot would be that Ruby is a language for pimply-faced, maladjusted computer nerds who live in their parent's basement and have never had a girlfriend. ;-)
