Got it!  I had to add -lsocket and -lnsl to the link instructions (a
Solaris thing).  I found the answer in my trusty MySQL book by
Widenius.  I don't know why it took me so long to look in there. 
Anyway, I'm rocking now.  Thanks to those who emailed me.
