Well, it's not the button down versus button up.  I found some demo code 
that showed me how to bind to "ButtonRelease-1".  Sadly, that didn't help.

I'll keep staring at the demo code to see if I can rejig it for my own 
purposes, but I'd still be interested to hear any ideas, particularly in 
terms of using the Tcl/Tk trace information to work out what's going wrong.
