The "auxiliary programs" I was referring to are primarily editors.  Many
editors will break a double-click selection at any non-alphanumeric
character.  Some are customizable, but many aren't.  So unless there is a good
reason why the parts of the name would frequently be selected separately, I
would prefer that underscores, etc. (I don't know about @, but most
[^0-9A-Za-z] will cause a break in the double clicked selection.)

Now it is true, that this is mainly a problem with the tool.  (It *should* be
more customizable.)  But until Ruby comes with a good IDE, this is a real
consideration.
