Thanks, Hal. The contrast is between 剥き出し mukidashi and 曖昧 aimai.  From
the kanji (my true love is classical Chinese, btw), it appears to be a
contrast between 'stripped bare', 'nakedly clear' and 'murky', 'vague'. So
there are quite a few ways to express either of these in English, including
straightforward and problematic as you note. (I always have to be careful not
to make too much of the kanji meanings in these modern texts and 'over
translate' them.)

But here, as is often the case, my actual question was whether either of these
terms, especially aimai, played a role as *jargon*, i.e., as a technical term
or technical slang within the (Ruby) programmer's realm. The answer I have is,
"No."
