[ruby-talk:6149] Ruby hi(gh), and pointer to Jotto program

From: David Alan Black <dblack@...>

Hello --

The "hi" part of the subject pertains to the fact that I'm new to this
list, and new to Ruby (a nuby? [old joke?]). Ergo: hi. The "high"
part refers to the Ruby high I have been on since I bought Dave and
Andy's book on Saturday. I wasn't looking for it -- I barely knew
Ruby existed -- but having idly opened it I couldn't put it down. I
am quite amazed by this language, and it couldn't have a better
introduction than the book.

I didn't want my first message to the list to consist only of gushing
(mostly, maybe, but not only), so to keep myself honest I have made
available a Ruby version of the word-guessing game Jotto, a game which
I first played on/against a PDP-10 in 1972. You can find it, in what
I hope will come up as saveable pure text, at
<http://icarus.shu.edu/dblack/jotto.rb>. I tend to write Jotto
implementations in languages I'm learning, as a kind of
ice-breaker/rite-of-passage type of thing. The Ruby version pleases
me more than most. I hope word-game fans on the list will like it,
and any Ruby-related critique/advice would be welcome :-) (There are a
couple of things in it which may yet put in an appearance here as
specific questions.)
