Thank you for your explanation.  Bignum objects unlike Fixnum objects are
effectively not singleton objects (this makes plenty of sense from a
implementation point of view) but the Bignum class does not sport a #new
method either. I guess this is necessary to facilitate the magical
transition between Fixnum and Bignum objects.
