Subject: [ruby-talk:5112] Ruby Book, Eng. tl,  kei/kata and shurui -> 'type'?

Jon, the editor, here...

Because 'type' is a technical term in programming languages, I try to
avoid using 'type' where the technical meaning is not intended.

In chapters 2, 4, and 10 (the chapters I've completed so far), I have
tried to enforce this policy, using Eng. 'type' for 型 (kei/kata) and
such words as 'kind', 'variety', 'category', plurals, etc., for 種類 
(shurui).

The Eng. tl of Table 8.1 is 'Types of Objects' for オブジェクトの種類 
(obujekuto no shurui)

Would it be correct to write オブジェクトの型 (obujekuto no kei/kata)
here?  Would that change the meaning? (Of course this is not a
suggestion. Just a question.)

OTOH, on the English side, would something like 'Kinds of Objects' be
incorrect or misleading here?

I'm inclined to leave the translation as 'Types of Objects' in this
case. But input from experts would help me to clarify my 'editorial
policy'.

Table 8.1 goes on to list and explain things like T_OBJECT, T_TRUE,
T_REGEXP, T_FIXNUM, T_SCOPE, T_NODE etc.
