[ruby-talk:5028] A Tru64 problem and ruby-talkietiquette

From: Aleksi Niemel<aleksi.niemela@...>
Date: 2000-09-20 15:42:50 UTC
List: ruby-talk #5028
I just saw this (the little I could see in English)
[ruby-list:25025] build 1.6.0 on Tru64 (zipped SJIS file attached).

Two points:
1)
I'm suffering from the same problem. I haven't tried to compile it earlier
than 1.4.5, so can't say if the problem is older than that.

Everytime I got back to the machine, there was a new ruby version, so I
tried to compile. Everything went fine (except loads of innocent looking
warnings) and the miniruby was built, but the make process couldn't continue
as the miniruby dumped core. I didn't ever have time to investigate, so I
didn't report nor did I make a patch.

So this is just yet another an "hi everybody, my name is Aleksi, and I'm a
victim (hooked ruby user)" -type of message (isn't that the confession which
activates the healing process :). And this is also a kind request to get
possibly following information about fixup process in English too.

2)
What's the policy for mixing different lists?

If there's something interesting going on at ruby-list, ext, dev or math
should the interesting part be copied here? Or is it ok to jump in the
middle of discussion on that list, using even English?

What's the right way to kindly request more information about topics
discussed in Japanese? Ask the author(s) directly, or throw a mail to
ruby-talk?

I am currently in favor of light load on ruby-talk. At the same time there's
many times threads, and especially "loose ends", that I'd like to thanks
authors for writing. So far I've stayed too silent - to the extent I feel
there's a possibility to misinterpret the situation; to interpret me to be
rude. I surely don't want that, but at the same time I feel "public"
messages "thanks for this little tidbit" flood too much too (without any
value adding information, that is :).

So should I, or shall we, establish a convention to thank privately? That is
of course with a premiss that nobody regards other people as arrogant, rude
or information sucker if no public thanks are expressed.
