I rather liked matz's 'inject' solution in ruby-talk-1047. I'm
paraphrasing: 


     module Enumerable

       # inject(n) { |n, i| ...}
       def inject(n)
         each { |i| n = yield(n, i) }
         return n
       end

       def sum
         inject(0) {|n, i| n += i }
       end
     end


     p [1,3,5,7,9].sum  # -> 25
