Both are excellent points! Although you can always use the raw .inject 
method to overcome the first objection:

       p ['foo', 'bar', 'baz'].inject("") {|n,i| n += i}
       p [].inject("all gone")  {|n,i| n += i}

But yours is certainly a more interesting solution.
