To do a much more concise summary of what I think the problem is:

BAD:

% rm -f .ext/powerpc-darwin8.1.0/readline.bundle ext/readline/
{Makefile,*.{o,bundle}}; make; echo "1+1" | ./ruby -Ilib:.ext/powerpc-
darwin8.1.0 bin/irb

GOOD:

% rm -f .ext/powerpc-darwin8.1.0/readline.bundle ext/readline/
{Makefile,*.{o,bundle}}; (cd ext/readline; ../../ruby extconf.rb ;
make); echo "1+1" | ./ruby -Ilib:ext/readline bin/irb
