And with the xlC compiler on AIX 4.3, everything ultimately worked fine too.
(On the 2nd attempt that is; the errors that I saw the first time were
apparently due to not doing a "make distclean" before redoing the configure and
make from a mounted directory on another machine.)
However I noticed that the -O2 flag did not occur on any of the compilation
lines. (I did not change or override any of the default configure options.)
