From: hal9000@... Date: 2000-06-19T22:34:30+00:00 Subject: [ruby-talk:03531] Ruby classes and inheritance Pardon me for referring to other languages such as C++ and Java in comparison with Ruby. I like Ruby, but currently it is C++ that is putting food on my table... Anyway, I was thinking: In C++, there is the concept of an "abstract class" that has "pure virtual" functions (methods). That is, the methods are specifically and purposely NOT defined in the parent, and as a result: 1. They MUST be defined in the child, and 2. the class can be used only for inheritance, not instantiated. There does not seem to be any parallel concept in Ruby. On the other hand, maybe I don't need it. I seem to remember a time or two it seemed appropriate in C++ to do uch a thing, but I can't think of an example. Comments, anyone? I've thoroughly confused myself. Hal -- Hal Fulton Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
