Thank you for all the input on this.  Yes, open files and other hardware
related things I can see would be problematic, and it would be hard to
detect what fell into that category for the compiler/interpreter, I
imagine.  But the Smalltalk approach sounds useful.  I'm n0t sure how
other langauges deal with this...
