That would be a totally different semantic for freeze,
though. Everywhere else, it's associated with the object, whereas here
it applies to the variable

   d = "dave"
   d.freeze
   d[1] = 'i'   # fails
   d = "walter" # OK

   $/ = "dave"
   $/.freeze
   $/[1] = 'i'   # fails
   $/ = "walter" # fails?


I don't think I like that.
