Someone reported problems here with [their mail on] an aging system,
so I had to install a bunch of tools. Most require that they are
built with GCC but this machine being a Sun box running Solaris 7
I knew I couldn't build the latest GCC on it. My experience has
been that I can build gcc-2.7.2 and then move up to a newer version,
usually in steps. So I build 2.7.2 and thought "I haven't much
time, what can I get away with?" I needed Perl (a dependency for
one tool), so tried to build 5.8.6 with the old gcc, and was
surprised when it succeeded. So then I thought about Ruby.
In the past I have needed gcc-3.x to build 1.8.2, which meant a lot
of work. However, building ruby-1.8.3 with gcc-2.7.2 worked.

Most of which are an inevitable result of GCC on a sun, and using
sun's native make. Ruby passed its own tests.
Anyway, this is principally to say "Thank you" to those working at
the sharp end of Ruby development, (and to let them know of the
warnings if they are deemed worthy of consideration).
I don't think many people will be build with gcc-2.7.2 these days,
but it's nice to know it works.
